The feared Burmese Python resting in a dog's water dish. The dog didn't mind!

Invasive Burmese Python Study and Legislation

1. I have been examining the reports by U.S. Government scientists regarding the non-native Burmese Python in Florida. They suggest that the environment is suitable enough for the snakes to spread from Florida to many of the southeastern states, as far west as Texas, and as far north as Washington, D.C.  My report, prepared jointly with Christina Arenare, should be finished soon. To read a draft of our report, click here.  It is, as I write this, 13 August 2012.

2. In early 2012, the Feds pushed through a law prohibiting six species of pythons and boas from being imported, exported, sold or owned in the U.S. I oppose this law for several reasons, mostly because of the use of extremely flawed science, biased officials, and failure to use proper channels to get a law passed. Frankly, I am only marginally concerned about python ownership; my objections have to do with rights, laws, and representation. To read my complete position statement, click here. Thank you!

News and Updates

Let's go, Friends! THIS is a chance to vote on an issue that should be near and dear to ALL of my friends and visitors to this site. You don't have to LIKE rattlesnakes to DISLIKE such cruel and inhumane treatment of ANY animal. So, PLEASE:

Stand up, be counted, and help stop the torture! Thank you!!

Yes, I DO have interests, and I shall share them as things develop. This set of photos shows some of the wonderful critters found around my home. My wonderful dog, Laddie, has been my assistant, having a nose that sniffs out skinks and at least one turtle. After being photographed, the animals are released where they were found. Here we have an Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina), Rough Green Snake (Opheodrys aestivus), Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis), Five-lined Skink (Plestiodon fasciatus), and a Green Tree Frog (Hyla cinerea).
